Lithium-ion batteries are everywhere, powering our phones, laptops, e-bikes, scooters, and electric vehicles. They’ve made modern life more convenient, but they also come with real fire safety concerns. When damaged, charged incorrectly, or thrown away incorrectly, these batteries can fail in dangerous ways.

We’ve all seen the headlines: an e-scooter catches fire in an apartment, a power bank ignites mid-flight, or a garage goes up in flames because of a battery left charging overnight. These aren’t isolated incidents and they're becoming more frequent.

What exactly is causing these fires? How can we help reduce the risk? Understanding the mechanics of lithium-ion battery failure is only the first step. We also need to think about where these batteries are used from residences, commercial spaces, transit systems and what protocols we have in place.

In the sections that follow, we’ll look at a range of lithium-ion battery fire incidents from around the world, grouped by occupancy type. These real-world examples offer insights into where vulnerabilities lie and more importantly, how we can address them. We’ll wrap up with practical recommendations aimed at minimizing risk and improving community safety.

The Hazards of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lithium-ion batteries are efficient but volatile energy sources. The risks associated with these batteries include:

  • Thermal Runaway – Once a battery cell overheats, it can trigger a chain reaction that results in explosions or jets of flame.

  • Toxic Smoke and Vapor Clouds – Combustion releases highly flammable and toxic vapors that endanger occupants and responding personnel.

  • Explosive Pressure Events – Batteries may rupture violently, especially when overcharged or physically damaged.

  • Fire Spread – Battery fires escalate rapidly, sometimes bypassing fire safety systems if ignition occurs outside protected areas.

Key Takeaways and Safety Recommendations

From apartments to airplanes, the reviewed incidents show lithium-ion battery fires are not limited to any one setting or geography. The following risk reduction strategies should be prioritized:

  1. Install Smoke Alarms Near Charging Areas – Early detection is key, especially where batteries are stored or charged indoors.

  2. Avoid Overcharging and Use Certified Equipment – Unregulated charging practices and third-party batteries are frequently responsible.

  3. Store and Charge Outside of Living Areas – Garages or detached sheds are safer than hallways or bedrooms.

  4. Implement Clear Egress Paths – Don’t charge batteries near exits, especially in homes with limited egress options.

  5. Support Sprinkler and Alarm Installations – Systems like those in Granby and Salina drastically reduced fire spread and damage.

As lithium-ion batteries become more common in our daily lives, from the tools we use at work to the devices we charge at home, they’re also introducing new risks we need to manage carefully.

So what do we do about it? First, we need to look closely at the patterns behind these incident and what’s causing them, where they’re happening, and how quickly they escalate.

Lithium-ion batteries offer tremendous benefits, but without the right safeguards in place, they can also become serious hazards. It's up to us to bridge that gap.
